The Welbertson Film Festival is just days away.
On April tenth, students from Belhaven University will showcase videos they directed, filmed, and starred in at the annual Welbertson Film Festival. The festival is hosted by Wells and Robertson, the two male dormitories on campus. In the past, Welbertson has featured short dramatic pieces, parodies, music videos, the occasional horror film, and of course, lots of Belhaven-based comedy. Every year there are new ideas being formulated by a number of talented young writers and directors, all fighting for the honor of winning a Welby.
This year, a new group of directors, writers, and actors is trying its hand to stand out in this honored festival. John McElroy (19, sophomore), Christopher Miller (20, sophomore), Jessica Wiggins (19, sophomore), and Andrew Reid (22, senior) are working on a piece unlike anything the festival has ever seen before. “We’re calling it Angels Take Belhaven as a nod to the eleventh doctor’s era,” said director John McElroy.
“Who?” One might ask. That’s right, it’s the eleventh series of Doctor Who. This group of Welbertson newcomers is planning to parody the longest running SCI-FI and most iconic BBC TV show, Doctor Who. Its an audacious task, but the cast and crew feel confident in their work to make a fun, Belhaven-related parody of the show.

Jessica Wiggins who plays the newest companion to The Doctor, Riley, is excited to be working on a project with so much historical significance.
“It incorporates something that has a really long history and a really vibrant fan-base. And, also, I think it’s a, its really a visionary concept that could be expanded, if wanted, into something that I think could be really, really amazing.”

After getting some behind the scenes footage, it is evident that the camaraderie amongst the cast members is genuine. The cast loves the story they are telling, and the director is passionate about making sure the video is seamless.
As for the plot, well, not much can be given away, but beware the weeping angels and
“Be on the look out for wibily-wobbly-timey-wimey-hijinks and scares and gadgets you wouldn’t see on any other show.” Says Christopher Miller (20, sophomore) who plays The Doctor in the film.
This is such a good story Micki. It really gives us insight into what the festival is and how it’s set up. The video is really good too! I like how you showed how excited the cast and crew is about their project. I can’t wait to check it out!

You did a great job on this story, Micki! The story itself is timely with the fact the festival is coming up quite soon. The editing on the video was amazing too; it had a very professional feel to the behind-the-scenes interview setup and with the graphics that you used. You did a good job of introducing the concept for the film and explaining the Doctor Who reference for those who might not have otherwise made the connection.

Great story Micki! It’s always amazing to see how people can bond over the arts, especially in film and acting. Some of my favorite memories were on stage and I gained so many wonderful friends. When people work together for something like this, it brings a refreshing atmosphere that draws more and more people to the cause. Doctor Who is DEFINITELY a worthy cause.

I really enjoyed the video of the whole cast Micki! It was edited so well! I am very impressed. I like how you went into detail on each cast member and how they were so excited, I felt like I was watching behind the scenes on a movie. I like that you wrote about this festival because it brings people to be more aware of it. A lot of people do not even know that Belhaven has this festival!

To hear that the male students are Belhaven are attempting a movie short on Doctor Who is interesting. I would personally love to see that. I have a friend who loves Doctor Who and I bet she would enjoy watching that. I also love to hear personally from the cast their excitement on doing this production and all the thought and work they put into making it possible.
